Gay Politics

RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY ...

Keeping a distance from the maze of gay political issues, some that make The Dish and some that don't, never did anyone harm.

First the big fish. AS quotes a missive from Dale Carpenter (who seldom invites comment):

With the exception of the Vermont clerk refusing to perform a civil union ceremony (about which more below), none of [the allged examples of discrimination against religion] involve a claim of discrimination provided by the gay couples' status as married or as joined in a civil union or domestic partnership. All of the cases involve the application of state laws barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation that pre-date the official recognition of gay relationships.

I've written my share of densely worded stuff, but did anyone else have to read that seven times?

Everybody loves a terrier, but not Jamie Kirchick. In a reply that should have been three paragraphs, maybe four, and 120-160 words, he goes on for three pages and a google words, including his regular grandstand ...

I can understand how the perception got built that some people appear interested in 'gay marriage' as a matter of respectability, not dignity, even if I would certainly not cast such an observation along the racial divide.

[The timing obviously isn't ripe for it, with all the joyous celebrations going on; but some folks (including AS?) seem to have no attention for any pitfalls that permissioning gay marriage might engender. If "practical wisdom" is a political-philosophy touchstone, that inattention is inconsistent.]
