Flash your 'stache - Movember Men With Little Time Left

AFGHANISTACHE

Checking in on how the men of Movember are doing.

It appears that some in Afghanistan are sympatico.

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – During the month of November, some Marines in Afghanistan are growing mustaches to raise awareness for men’s health.

-True that

Face of the Day

The Milk Mustache

[pic link for interesting blog entry]

Meanwhile, there is a complex history of (ancient) mustaches and beards.

...the moustache worn alone is what unmakes the man, not when he wears it together with a beard. Shaving (or plucking) off the beard is the fatal sign of effeminacy. If so, Alexander Severus’ moustache passes muster and he can’t be called a ‘sissy’ for that reason.

HOW TO STEAL A MUSTACHE PHOTO

As the month of growing mustaches for charity moves into the opening week (Peach Fuzz Week), it pays to have a look at one who has made a fine art out of getting mo pictures, perhaps even from the unwilling. Clever monkey (check out the titles, too).

PROFESSIONAL LENGTH HAIR

The Wall Street Journal notes, "Employees in customer-facing roles at Pitney Bowes Inc., a maker of mail processing equipment and supplies, are encouraged -- but not required -- to mirror the look of their clients,..." And offers up these statistics and factoids:

  • "None of the chief executive officers at the top 10 Fortune 500 companies have mustaches, ..."
  • "That's not the case though for the New York Yankees. Players are prohibited from donning facial hair below the upper lip, says Jason Zillo, a spokesman for the team. This means mustaches are allowed, though they must be neatly groomed, he added."

The fine art of the mustache: Resources

MUSTACHE AND BEARD WEARERS WON'T BE CUT OFF

Wikistashenberdia allows you to properly play a game of name that 'stache or ("Mo", as they apparently say down under).

Check it out.

Something called a "ball-buffer", even - no doubt an obscure billiards reference. Pandering pogonologists will be delighted.

Meanwhile, a prodigious blog, "Mustaches of the Nineteenth Century" has been at it for a long while now.

Of note:

In fact, a man without a mustache is no longer a man. I do not care much for a beard; it almost always makes a man look untidy. But a mustache, oh, a mustache is indispensable to a manly face. .. I have thought over the matter a great deal but hardly dare to write my thoughts. Words look so different on paper and the subject is so difficult, so delicate, so dangerous that it requires infinite skill to tackle it.

-Mr. spare-no-details, Guy de Maupassant

Comes complete with a glossary, including something called "beardism", i.e. "The vile preference of raggedy beards over the clean and sublime mustache."

Last, a goochie-goochie-coo from a blogger who asks, "Who are the men who look like Graham Gooch?", and comes up with this, most recently, a.k.a. Nigell Mansell:

My Goochalike vote? It has to go to 'stach-from-the-past, Mark Spitz, posing here before it was fashionable to do so as such:

Courtesy of the mates from Austrailia, the international charity mustache, quaintly called "MOs" down under, is underway in November, ...er, Movember.

The fine art of the mustache: The Political Moustache, Britain

The Mail tracks what is was.

One young Tory MP said that "Eden had to prove he had a real moustache" - a metaphor for proving his courage. The Prime Minister's wife, Clarissa, did her best to help.

Moments before her husband's broadcast on November 3, 1956, the eve of the invasion of Suez, she saw on a television monitor that his moustache was almost invisible and quickly blackened it with her mascara. By then, the moustache was vanishing as fast as the Empire.

True, it had ceased to be compulsory in the Army as early as 1916, when King's Regulations had permitted shaving the upper lip.

Reclaiming the toothbrush mustache? Madness.

But Richard Cohen has got it going with just the same. 'You got to have a gimick' to play in the Vanity Fair.

Separately, non metrosexual, mais ubersexual!
