Weekly Casualty Lists: Week 19, Yr OEF+7

Two infantrymen from the Georgian national army this week. Another journalist this week. All IED-attacks this week, save one. Three killed in al-Anbar - hope that they were not among those slated to be re-deployed in the next weeks.

Within the violence, the assault on Sahwas ("awakening") members continues (again, we have no systematic information from the USG, so ...). Iranian Coastguard makes the list for the first time I can recall. Beheadings in ... Anbar. Sadly, U.S. airstrikes show up noticeably. Mass graves out of the news this week...

IBC reports for April: April Total: 1,334, including 66 children; 136 civilians were killed by US Forces.

In many ways, this greatly masks the civilian toll for the prologued, violent nation-building effort.

The number of Iraqi orphans increased in the last few years due to the war. According to official Iraqi government statistics released in December 2007, the number of Iraqi orphans had reached at least five million over the last three years. Many due to the Sunni-Shia conflict. There are several social organizations caring for a small number of these Iraqi orphans, such as Child Aid International. There are approximately 26 orphanages that Alive in Baghdad has been able to locate around Iraq. Eight orphanages are in Baghdad and another 18 are distributed all over Iraq and generally they accept kids between the age of 6 and 18 years old.

One of the biggest scandals that happened in the history of the Iraq conflict is the one that happened in Al-Hanan orphanage. There were many pictures distributed online and by television of Iraqi orphans lying on the floor naked, with no food for weeks, sick and nearly dying. After this the Iraqi government began to show more attention for the orphans, there were many stories being reported regarding Al-Hanan Orphanage, like sexual abuses and bad treatment of the kids living there.

-Alive in Baghdad

Also:

Citing figures from the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), she said that only half of Iraq’s children are currently going to school, and that “the issue of psychosocial services remains extremely problematic with surveys in Basra and other places showing 80 per cent with psychological symptoms.”

Separately, jew-hatred continues to be a touchstone ... politically and otherwise:

Baghdad, 07 May 2008 -- A controversial Iraqi politician has revealed that scores of Iraqi children are being treated in Tel Aviv, however, Mithal Al Alousi, has denied any role in transferring these children for treatment.

Finally: irreversibility?

With some luck (and free time) an update of enemy casualty lists.

Last weeks list update with released names (use tag to retrieve list).
