You Bet Its Not Just Walter Reed

NON-DEFENSE SPENDING

How are we supposed to read this outpouring of concern over the abysmal management at Walter Reed?

Shouldn't the standard line be that the VA is yet another example of why "small" government is godly?

And health-benefits are just another faux entitlement of the middle-class. We need to get people off VA health-insurance, right, and onto private health care?

Actually, following the Romney injuction that we-must-just-worry-about-NON-defense spending, I've been trying to do a little research on how the soaring cost of health care has been affecting the fiscal balance, even as the GOP pushes for permanent increases in the size of the military, before the next President has to spend more, just to earn stripes in his own right.

Here is an interesting graph - VA program enrollment has been rising quickly under Bush. Sadly, these figures only go through 2004... 2.5M additional enrollees, 2000-2004 (green line).
