NAFTA Tussle - Silly Season on the Backstretch

LOOKING FOR THAT WILLIE HORTON MOMENT

With every pol-consultant no doubt chomping at the bit for that last minute "Willie Horton" like moment, I have to laugh at the Clinton campaign's field assault on Austen Goolsbee. Of all the goofy things he's said, they want some private remark to a Canadian official to mean something dire.

WHAT THE HECK IS A "TRADE TIME OUT"?

With NAFTA, some people are doing well and some are not and we're going to have a nondescript "time out" to renegotiate a nondescript "win-win".

With such clarity from Day One, who could have any "doubts"?
Why is it especially funny? Well, it's like when Hillary said that she voted for that Bankruptcy provision, but was glad when the bill ultimately didn't become law ...

Here's her statement on NAFTA, from her "hub":

"[Under NAFTA] There are parts of the country that are doing well and other parts that are really suffering. And we should make this as much of a win/win for America as possible. So there’s no doubt about where I stand or where my campaign stands."

Some people are doing well and some are not and we're going to have a nondescript "time out" to renegotiate a nondescript win-win.

With such clarity from Day One, who could have any "doubts"?

UNFORCED ERRORS and the KITCHEN SINK ATTACK, "PICK THE LEAST WORST CANDIDATE"

Meanwhile, the Clinton kitchen-sink attack has created some other unforced errors. Senator Rockefeller did indeed vote with Clinton, for the AUMF.

The general flap shows how horrible it is, when we let the terms of the debate degenerate into picking the least-worst candidate, while the candidates gush about you choosing the best candidate.

After that, it does seem to be the first time that Obama is struggling to define himself, against the tide and a momentarily unfavorably press.
