Former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA), prior to Coulter’s appearance: “I am happy to hear that after you hear from me, you will hear from Ann Coulter. That is a good thing. Oh yeah!”
Mitt Romney's Christian values are what, here? Do we really think that the audience is cheering free speech or cheering those who are trying to re-claim these old-school 'hate words'?
Aren't these people really just cheering their own moral rectitude? Is that a Christian thing to do?
Is she doing anything but provoking her political rivals - is that a Christian value? Is this the Christian way to talk to each other?
Andrew is right that the new generation is enthralled with these 'noise makers'. Somehow, to them, they are authentic. "Raw" is right and keeping-it-real.
The rest of the Conservative 'coalition', even if they write reviews 'criticizing' folks like Dinesh D'Souza (who Wikipedia reports dated Ann Coulter), strangely do not want to distance themselves from D'Souza himself, qua Conservatives, keeping a place for him in the Big Tent. At the same time, they are ready to try to distance themselves from thoughtful people, like Andrew himself.
And why is that? It's because the new Right has sanctioned, in the name of Reagan Revolution or Rovian politics or whatever, a Vanguard of conservative Bolsheviks -- those who are inspired by the spirit - the Christian Spirit? - to even self-debasing means to stick-it to to their political "enemies", to "liberals", "secular-progressives", the "Godless".
