We spent the afternoon at the vet, saying goodbye to our beloved Spencer, who was mistakenly named such as it was thought she was a boy.
We're still numb. I can't remove her second-favorite fleece from the bed, even though she won't be coming for it tonight ...
I have no idea what is going on in "the world".
[...the conductor's expression at the end is just as much a part of this as any of the notes:]

No Pride this year ...

Conservative Corporatist?
the alternative - skewing taxes to target success - is an absurd set of incentives to put into a growing society.
ENGINEERING "SUCCESS"
I'm glad someone else took AS to task for this rather shopworn, long-in-the-tooth, Thatcher-era bombast.
It's amazing how imbibed that is, still, that it seems almost a principle to some, rather than a perspective (or merely the political posturing it was for Maggie et. al.).
Apart from the obvious, but non-trivial, observation that mere income is not "success", the whole house of cards rests on the notion (a), that 'the system' somehow allocates wealth more fairly than an 'empowered' government can do and, (b), that "incentive" is only money.
I tell you this: if you put the position of Chairman of AT&T, as it once existed, say, up for bid, you'd get a large number of qualified people willing to work in such a job for a LOT less than those who have had it.
Of course, that example is a fine illustration - and refutation - of points "a" and "b" above. One doesn't even have to go in for communism, socialism, or central planning, in general, to make that point. No does one have to make a choice between progressive income taxes or highly progressive consumption taxes, to make that point.
'ENGINEERING' IN THE LONG RUN
What's more, it's entirely conceivable that societies, as they age and mature, especially economically, are capable of a greater amount of 'smart engineering' than early-age societies.
To assume the "conservative corporatist" view that nothing evolves - politically, morally, organizationally, even against the backdrop of rising living standards, seems almost absurd.
"Yes, we can."
Gun Rights are a Gay Issue
... so say the Log Cabin Republicans. Check out the front page of their website. (Clearly, they've taken the phrase, "Is that a pistol in your pocket, ...", too literally.)
Separately, AS takes the HRC to task, but the Log Cabins haven't provided much of a foil (o.k., they've provided no foil whatsoever on the issue, so far as what is visible).
Leave ...
I suppose you are all thinking that I might post something on the Yoo/Addington hearings or on the oil hearings Tuesday, but all that seems worlds away right now.
Our oldest just had her first seizure yesterday evening.
She is the second cat of ours this year to start with that. Sadly, she had two more last night, so it may be even shorter than with the first.
We were hoping she'd make it to 20, coming up in October. After a full life, it seems cosmicly unfair that she'd have to take this on, rather than pass in her sleep.

More Electoral College Madness
After looking at Amber's list and at the fantastic compilation done by DemConWatch, I decided to run the figures with Maine and Wisconsin as "blue". Nevada I'm leaving as tossup (everyone has it that way). Also leaving NH as tossup, for now, just because McCain has always done well with N.H. voters, not because the state seems to be trending toward him.

Housekeeping
Why inauguration is just the beginning ...
... in many ways the battle to change monied Washington is just getting started.
Inauguration, if Obama is lucky to have it, will be just the beginning.
Hoyer is one of the largest PAC recipients in Congress, both sides of the isle. last I looked at the figures. I don't know if he gets telco PAC money, though, to be fair:
But Hoyer has been targeted by the left in the past -- MoveOn.org has run radio ads against him -- but he was reelected with nearly 83 percent of the vote in 2006, and he’s never drawn less than 65 percent of the vote.
Small Government Conservative Watch: Assault on the Judiciary
The GOP's Reagan Devolutionies were in full swing during the time of Bush, at least as far as the judiciary was concerned.
It's not enough to be a good prosecutor or a smart, experienced attorney. You have to pass political muster.
Monica Goodling, who "went over the line", was the tip of the iceberg, apparently.
We can only guess what has gone on at State, where many left voluntarily, because of the insupportable Bush-Cheney-Rice era policies.
As for the CIA, well, one doubts whether Plame was the only retribution.
Tim Russert on Steroids
FOR THE LOVE OF RUSSERT'S INFAMOUS FLIP-CHARTS ...
I'm now able to show the combos behind the summary statistics. Update below.
Same set of 'battleground' states as before, for comparability. The punditry range on what is truly a "tossup" seems to have narrowed a bit. Maine and New Hampshire, for instance, are "blue" or "lean blue" on many lists, now...
This list was drawn up from speculation on what the party's themselves would contest, rather than on the current status of the opinion polls (although there is obviously overlap).
Table 1.Block "Bare Bones" Win Combos Combs to Reach 270 exactly Probably of 270 or more Win Probability ALL 444 105 50% 100% BLUE 241 54 37% 74% RED 203 51 13% 26%
"bare bones" represents just enough states to win, but no more (i.e. what Nate at 538 called a "no excess" win),
Firefox3 has a nifty way to control text-size (all shortcuts, here) - it's all done by "zoom". "Zoom" also lets you zoom legacy, built-for-small-screen-standard websites to take advantage of a larger screen, if you are using one.
It works wonders for "standard" blogger pages. Be sure to check it out.
