Treat yourself to "Passing Strange", now in previews on Broadway (having moved to the Belasco from The Public, downtown).
I don't pass out a lot of unqualified praise, but this might fall into the category of, "Don't ask questions, just go see it - it's unique".
It's full of Stew's characteristic wittiness and ability to turn a phrase, to make one think, that he dovetails with a score that doesn't bore and an ensemble that would probably win an award if there were an ensemble category (perhaps casting will take a mention, if not more).
"Sardonic enlightenment" might cover part of it. Another part might be consciously unselfconscious self-parody - and you gotta dig that (really, there are some precious throw-away lines and layers of hilarious self-reference that mirror the plot-line struggle toward .... Consciousness, to short-hand it a bit too much).
