Manufacturing Umbrage

Michael Kinsley's phrase, taken from an article caught by AS, just has to be repeated here in light of the comments just now on FOX:

Welcome to the wonderful world of umbrage, the new language of American politics. -How Dare You, by MK

Although a far better essayist than I, what MK doesn't mention is that, when the terror alert level moves above "elevated", the recommended action is to wrap yourself in the flag so tight that your privates are showing and salute.

All the same, while the manufacturing of umbrage is a perfidious ploy, I cannot say I'd be excited about developing a generalized hostility to the military. Please, no Vietnam repeat ... even at maximal levels of frustration under Bush.

btw, not to let it slip by, but it's always fashionable to decry liberals as being unknowningly snobbish, as AS comes close to doing for Bob Herbert.

At least AS doesn't fail to skewer the other side, if he thinks they need it.

Separately, I wonder if Alan Keyes will ever wake up one morning and wonder if he himself isn't 'The crisis in the Republic'?
