After watching George Tenant on Charlie Rose and listening just a little to the running commentary, can anyone answer what the heck is George Tenant doing?
Whatever he is trying to do, he is not pulling it off, it doesn't seem. Is that more testament to his political incompetence? George, when you are ready to testify at the President's Senate impeachment trial, let us know, o.k., otherwise there is no news in what you won't say about what you said to the President at decision time?
I thought the poor guy sounded rather like McNamara, circa 1980. If true, he's still got a long ways to go on his personal journey ... (At the time, I thought he was behind the President's policy, so I'm not sure how to place all this reporting about "misgivings").
I can say one thing though, we can thank our lucky stars that Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld-Rice didn't face a Bay-of-Pigs like disaster in their first term (or even now). Jack Kennedy's set-up of a rigorous decisions process is the stuff of legend. Yet for Bush, it appears that the worst interpretations of the Downing Street Memo appear to have increasing validity. If true, this has horrible consequences for the legitimacy of the war and is a major propaganda "win" for the jihadis, arguably -- one that we might have hoped remained under wraps at least until our soldiers were out of harm's way.
