COULD IMMIGRATION BE ONE OF THE 'FINAL ROUND' ISSUES OF 2008 PRESIDENTIAL RACE?
If so, Democrats need to go on the offensive, I think, if my weekly dose of CNN immigrant rage and hatred today on Lou Dobbs Show is any indicator of how opinion is being manufactured on the issue.
Lou rejected out of hand New York Governor Spitzer's plea that a new tone might characterize the debate over how to deal with illegal immigrants working in the nation today.
Troubling though that is, he went on to suggest that he hoped that people would vote against Hillary at "the polls" to register their dissent, because she had a position that he interpreted to both agree with Spitzer and not to.
He's basically telling people how to react to certain candidates "at the polls", which is telling people who to vote for, yes?
He then covered himself, generalizing his comments, to "any Democrat" then to "any Democrat or Republican" but he'd already said what he did about Hillary.
He continues to have problems with fact-checking, as Leslie Stahl found out just a short while back His show typically has one to two segments on immigration each time it airs, covering a guesstimated 20-60% of the airtime on plain issue advocacy.
Tonight, he had on a guest from Orange County who blasted a long string of unsubstantiated allegations against day workers, including that they were "swarming customers" at some stores. The Lou Dobbs Show provided no evidence, none, no independent corroboration of these.
He continues to paint everything short of deportation as amnesty or disrespect of the law.
After so long, no one is apparently going to change his mind on the topic. (He is, afterall, a Harvard man ...).
