I Raise My Torch and Set Fire To Myself and Others

Andrew Sullivan is on a tear over Sarah Palin.

He's right, though. We laugh at her at our own peril. The fact that she can energize the GOP base but the Democratic base doesn't get enraged enough for strong voter turnout is indicative of that peril.

The American experience with enlightened self-governance itself is on the rocks.

For one thing, she's confused loving our troops with making rational, hard, and painful decisions about war. We are at $159 billion budgeted and $33 billion supplemental for the upcoming year in war, alone.

As before, no one is asked to sacrifice a damned thing for these expenditures. GOP voted down reinstatement of the pay-go rules they waved in pursuit of the Bush-era tax cuts.

The Democrats this year will be fully complicit in that bullshit, by the way, if they aren't careful.

They have the excuse of economic downturn, but they aren't even taking responsibility to warn people about it, to distinguish their actions for the rankly irresponsible behavior of those who came before them and Sarah Palin.
