BUSH-CHENEY FAILED LEGAL STRATEGIES STILL PLAGUE THE REPUBLIC
While the British and the Spanish and the Italians (I think?) were busy bringing terrorists to trial and getting it done, what were Bush-Cheney doing?
They didn't have any plan, except maybe that they themselves were the plan.
What happens when you have an Executive that would risk the nation's reputation on dicey legal strategies, rather than up-the-middle consensus?
Well, they strung out bringing people to trial, leaving the next Administration to clean up the mess.
And what a mess it is.
Key standards for evidence, tossed aside, now means that we probably can't successfully prosecute the people in need of it. We're left looking like a banana Republic, the very dictators hated in parts of the world, who imprison without trial, rigorous evidence, etc.
This weakens the USA. Giving up rule of law seemed to them so easy and politically expedient, perhaps, at the time. But, now, not so much.
