Signature Issues

Because I selected, in infinite irrelevant punditry, "the environment" as one of two issues I thought might be good Obama signature issues to bring into a battle with McCain, I'll follow Yglesias, who points out "The Myth of Green McCain."

Update: more from Media Matters - proving that the media has not vetted McCain, perhaps because of his rapid 10 week rise to power, from New Hampshire to his March 5th clinch.

If I read one more "Myth of" story about McCain, I think we'll have to call him a mythical candidate.

McCAIN AS PRODUCT OF SPECIAL INTERESTS, NOT MASTER OF THEM

Seriously trying to pin down what fumes are running the political phenomenon of John McCain is one difficult task.

The collection of his failure on issues his marginal supporters seem to excuse (at least for now).

The one issue I think that will get out of his control is his abiding reliance on federal lobbyists.

McCain, A True Conservative

From George Will, no less, not too long ago, but missed in that news cycle:

McCain should thank the Times also because its semi-steamy story distracted attention from an unsavory story about McCain's dexterity in gaming the system for taxpayer financing of campaigns. Last summer, when his mismanagement of his campaign left it destitute, he applied for public funding, which entails spending limits. He seemed to promise to use tax dollars as partial collateral for a bank loan.

There are two ways for a candidate to get on Ohio's primary ballot -- comply with complex, expensive rules for gathering signatures or simply be certified to receive taxpayer funding. McCain's major Republican rivals did the former. He did the latter.

Let me just be the first to say that this calls into question - Krauthammer rules, naturally - everything we know about John McCain, "over 20 years".

Let me also be the first to ask, would John trade arms-for-hostages, just like his close associate Ronald Reagan, whom he considered a spiritual mentor and for whom he was a "foot soldier", if it seemed like a good way to get on the Ohio ballot, proverbially speaking?

..

For the Record

Jonah still getting a stealth erection over Dr. Jeremiah Wright and the rest of the GOP's freak show Eye-of-Sauron.

VICKI'S NON-STORY STORY

So, when the news about McCain's relationship with Viki the influencer was unveiled, why the big, concerted, synchronized, attack on The New York Times?

Seriously, I'm interested in knowing more about why McCain's staff had to intervene to save the Senator from himself, from "bad appearances". I think that's exactly the kind of non-distraction distraction that we need to know more about. It calls into question everything we know about the Senator's judgment "over 20 years", leading up to that event.

Afterall, the standard is set so low, the NYT should have felt obliged, right Jonah?:

Anything that gives us a clue as to what those might be is not only fair game, it is the game.

I THINK I NEED A SHOWER, AFTER THAT RUBBISH

Anything? anything?

... and then they complain that it is liberals who coarsen the culture, when they just embraced, on the pages of the LA Times, no less, a politics that teaches kids that "anything" is fair game.

People probably think I exaggerate when I say "den of vipers" in connection with the NR crowd.

Here's to a long and trying wilderness period for them. I really hope that everyone votes for that.
